Everytime I eat a avacado ,I wash off the pit in cool water ,and push the pit into a pot of houseplant soil .Keep it well watered ...and before long a new plant is growing .One of the stalks is up to the ceiling....this one is several yrs old .In our climate (Canada ) this is a houseplant only .If I'm not diligent with the watering ,some of the stalks will lose all their leaves ,I just pull these out ,pit and all ,and next time I have a avocado I refill the hole with the new pit .

Pick a partly sun, partly shade area to put your potential Avocado Tree. Plant your avocado pit with the round side down, in the soil about three inches down in the soil. Cover and pat it gently. Water it well.
