I read that if I cut the green sprouts off garlic that it still can be used for cooking.  Is this true cause the garlic is still somewhat firm and want to use it in dog food to help out with the tick problem we are having here in New Mexico.  What will happen if the sprouts are eaten because they are still a pretty green color and nothing looks wrong with them.

Nothing will happen if you eat the green sprouts.  Matter of fact, the Native Americans mostly want their garlic to have those sprouts for cooking purposes.  It is perfectly natural for Garlic to sprout, and all of Garlic is edible -Birdy

Thanks so much. I could not understand why some said to throw it away.  It made me think that I was eating something that would make us sick.

you could clean and chop them and freeze them in a freezer bag....I would double it.

then as you need to make the dog food you can take it out and defrost it.

or you could plant some individual bulbs and you would have new garlic next year.

Garlic is planted now.....and dug up next July. I hang the garlic in the kitchen over the counter top where I can reach it to use it for a upcoming dish.

We live in 5a and we plant garlic in July just in the ground as deep as the clove.  They grow during the year and dig them up in July.

I never put my garlic in refirg.  In zone 6 now is the perfect time to plant garlic; 4 inched deep for next year.  I've left garlic in the ground year round before and got lots of tiny baby bulbs to replant. So, this leads me to believe they need a cold season to sprout and that's why they're sprouting in your fridge.
