We have small (almost pencil eraser size) red berries that resemble strawberries growing in our residential yards. The kids are curious about them and I would like to know if they are dangerous to eat and what steps to take should my child eat one and it is poisonous. They grow on vines and branch out to a stem that has a 5 leaf pattern with the berry in the middle. Along side the berry sprout is another 3 leaf group.

Some are and some aren't!  There is a type of wild strawberry that is and it blooms white and the berry itself looks exactly like a miniature strawberry--you can see the individual seeds on the surface of the fruit.  There is another type that is not edible and it has a yellow bloom and the fruits are more fuzzy looking and you don't see the seeds as clearly.  I would suggest googling wild strawberries and finding images to compare yours with.
