How can we save our large old oak tree, the bark is falling off in a large section about 15 inches

i wish you could give me more details.when the bark falls off is there alot of sawdust or some pest larvae?how old?is there an excretion of sap in places?-this can be borers or pests.if it is just dying from old age(some oaks can live over 100yrs)and bark is peeling while dead branches are falling i would have the tree removed and put something in to replace it so it doesnt become a danger.if you see signs of pest damage,ID the pest ,prune all diseased dying dead limbs,treat it and hopefully it will thrive.if it is from old age the it is dying from inside out and shrinking back from the bark because the living sapwood is dying and there is nothing you can do

I would have someone from the Forrest service look at it.  If it is diseased, it might have to come down.  If it was hit by a car and it took off some bark, you can use black top to seal it.  But I would get a professional opinion first  If it has some kind of bug, they have a dormant oil that you could use .  That will stop any eggs from forming.  If branches are dropping off and leaves are dying it might be to late to save it.  Those trees grow very tall.

Was it hit by lightening....or damaged by a vehicle....do you see bugs.....treat it for bugs first with Sevin......no bugs.....use Spectracide puning seal on the damage to keep bugs out and woodpeckers from pecking.

I have a Bradford Pear ...   there is something boring holes in it ...  the leaves are turning brown and falling off ...  I live in Huntersville N.C.
