Hello Irene,
I live in zone six and have had hostas at my house when I lived in TN and I now live in PA. (both zone six) After your Hostas are 2-3 years old you can dig them up in the early spring. Dig the whole plant up and cut it into sections leaving at elast 3-5 crowns on each section. Use a large sharp knife or I have used a sharp shovel. Replant wherever. Do this when you see the crowns at about 1-2 inches or just beginning to form leaves. I have not lost one in the process yet. Very easy to do successfully.
