Tomatoes need a minimum of 6 hours of full sun per day.  I grew up in the south in the country where everyone grows tomatoes and they're always grown in full sun.  I did a traditional garden for 4 years where they got at least 6-8 hours of full sun per day, and I had 40 tomato plants, all of which produced prolifically.  All of my friends who are master gardeners have plant their tomatoes where they get a minimum of 6-8 hours of full sun.  I'm currently growing 6 plants in raised beds where they get at least 6 hours of full sun per day and am having no problems with production.  Good luck and enjoy! :-)

Our 67 tomatoe plants are planted in full sun with black ground cloth, staked and tie with strips of old sheets. I am loaded with tomatoes.  We prepared the ground in the spring using a plow and threw old composted horsemanure, lime, leaves, hay and mulch and turned it over several times, used a rake bar to make it even and  ground cloth down.
