where is the best place for planting a cordyline plant, and how much water does it require?

should they be in direct sun or part sun/part shade, and how heat tolerant are they?   We live in New Orleans and the heat right now is enough to melt a person.

 

We are planning an waterfountain/fall feature?  Can it be planted around that area safely, or should it be away from the fountain area?  That, and how often do you feed it?  Also, what bugs, worms, catipillars or other garden pests, should I be concerned with?

Any information, suggestions, little secrets that you have to offer will be greatly appreciated.
