A mature fig tree in our yard suddenly died. Last year it had bloomed and had fruit (although not alot). This spring, when no buds started forming, we had a tree expert take a look at it, and he confirmed it was dead. Digging it up today, we found that the roots were extremely wet and rotted. Our neighbor's hot tub is just over the fence from the tree (less that 6') and we were wondering if it was possible it could be the cause (either through a leak or when they empty the tub to clean it). Nothing else in the garden seems to be suffering - although we only have some smaller plants and ferns in that area.

Fig trees last a while but then they can die off............needs full sun and a well drained area and it should not be against the house foundation or a wall.  A protected area is good for them, full sun..........protected for winter............when you dig that out fill that in so you don't get water in the cellar.  In the winter we put 4 pieces of glass around our fig & filled it with leaves & hay....................if it freezes in your area you could wrap it.  Happy summer.
