what causes my hosta leaves to be frayed at ground and fall off

after the sun goes down mix 1 teasp of liquid hand soap & 1 qt water mix and spray on and under leaves

in the fall use old cow or horse manure and some lime to amend the soil

Probably ear wigs or slugs. that means the soil is too wet and those bugs like it that way. If the earwigs are attacking your plants it is probably because they do not have other bugs to eat. They can be beneficial but when they run out of their supply, they turn to plants. If you use horse manure cook it first in your compost to kill off the weed seeds. otherwise you will have buches of weeds next year. you can use slug bate called slugg-o. or SAFE for ground bugs, but do not use it if birds like to scrounge in the area.
