How do you know when radishes or carrots are ready to be picked?

How are you suppose to know when underground vegetables are ready for picking/harvesting?  This is our first year in growing turnips, carrots and radishes.  Today is June 1, 2013.  Thank you for any help you can give us.

radishes will push up from under the ground....you will see the red or black skin......they are spring time into early summer.

carrotts have big green leafy tops.....seeds are planted in sand V beds and they also will show.  doing sand beds let the carrotts to grow straight instead of crooked. depend on how big you want them to grown.  Do you want tiny, sweet carrotts or long tougher carrotts for soup.

Carrots are ready to be picked when the leaves are as big as they can get. But they can be pulled at any time. It really depends on how big you want them.
