the plant can stay alive forever if it is watered, fed, and fertilized. It should be in a nice south facing window where it gets bright daylight. Feed it per the directions on the container of African Violet food you have decided to use. Water the plant either from the bottom in which case the water will wick upto the top of the plant. Or spread the leaves gently and water from the top slowly. Don't get water on the leaves. That makes brown marks on the leaves.
Look carefully at the flower stem. Some plants are of the trailing varieties and others only get one flower per stem. If you don't see a tiny bud developing on the stem then just pinch the entire stem off. If you see what looks ;ole a tiny bud just pinch back to the bud. Either way you should have new flowers within a couple of weeks as long as the plant is getting enough light.
