can i overwinter cannas in the ground in zone 7

Question

The cannas are cut back to 3 inches now that the foliage died. Is there a way to just cover the cannas with mulch and leaves or burlap over the winter and keep them in the ground?

I lived in zone 7, I did put 12 inches of mulch...........some came up & some did not come up....................I would dig them up if you want them to come back next year.

I've overwintered cannas successfuly for several years running in zone 7. I clip them close to the ground in the fall after the stems turn brown and cover the area with fallen leaves. The plants are about 8 feet from the western wall of my house. I see them coming up again this year. I'd provide a good mulch layer and leave them in the ground. I've a few friends who have done the same. Good luck!
