How do I replant an indoor fern that has a thick root system that grows out and around the pot?

I have a good size fern plant, big green finger like leaves, not the feathery type, that has a root system that grows out and around the pot.  I need to put this into a new hanging pot because the bottom of the pot has no plate to catch excess water and also it seems as if the water goes right thru the pot.  Not sure how much benefit the plant is getting from watering when nothing seems to stay in the container.

I will obviously have to cut the current pot apart to release the plant, but do I just bury the existing roots in the new pot?

I would take this work to do outside in the shade.............carefully take it out of the pot.  You might be able to seperate the new growth and make 2 pots.  Does it have to be a hanging pot or can it be one on a stand with a container under it for run off......................The plant must be happy where it in that location.  If you don't have room for it you can always give it as a gift telling them which side of they home to put it in..........Happy summer.
