I live in northern california. I'm growing heirloom sugar babys this year (2014). I have 6 melons that are the size of a small soccer ball in varying shades of green. They are being grown in a raised bed in a mixture of organic compost with steer manure that was purchased, composted rice hulls and worm castings. Unfortunately, my water source is from a municipal supply. I only water from the bottom at the original plant site and have used an organic 6-4-4 feed twice. Also used a neem oil spray earlier in the season due to an aphid problem that was resolved (around july 1) the only top water has been from the few showers we've had and the sprinklers that run about 6 mins a night. The leaves on the outside of the bed look fine, but the leaves inside the bed are a mottled yellowish color and appear to have something on the underside of the leaves.
The vines from the 3 plants, planted in a hill, have been trained through the slats in the bed so that they are on the outside and trailing over the concrete where I've placed a 4'x6' burlap piece to avoid heat from the concrete burning the melons.
