Notice the bottom leaves looked wilted yesterday, thought it a little odd and gave it some extra tlc. The morning it was wilted almost all the way up the stem -- all five feet of it. The flower on top is just starting to show a few yellow petals. I'd hate to lose it now. The oddest part is that it's right next to another sunflower that looks as happy as can be. It is well watered in a good-draining, loose soil in a raised bed. Fertilized with fish emulsion about three weeks ago. Planted green beans (now about 6 inches tall) beside so they could run up the sunflower 'pole.' No evidence of borers or pests at base, but I really don't know what to look for.
