How can I get rid of unknown pest "chewing" holes in and consuming green leaves on my purple heliotrope?

All sources say heliotrope, commonly known as "Cherry Pie Plant" has few pests that like it, i.e., spider mites, mealy bugs, or aphids.  The pest that is bothering my plants doesn't show any signs of the aforementioned.  The leaves are being chewed as if by a caterpillar or worm but nothing is visible.  Seems to happen at night and small, round pellets are left on the ground when I go out on my open air porch in the am to check my plants.  They are growing in containers...Appreciate any help anyone has to offer!  Thank you!!!

I hope that you know that plant is poisonious...............mix 2 tablespoons of dawn with 1 drop of hot sauce....1 qt water and spray.............spray again if you see new holes....get under the leaves.  could be a chipmonk or mouse, vole or mole.  can you hang it on a chain off the edge of your roof?

Thanks for your input. Will give the spray a try. Not possible to hang it and I don't think it is a rodent. Must be an insect. Had heard it is poisonous.
