I would very carefully take off the sheets.............and make somekind of clear enclosure around the plant giving it lots of breathing room on the sides & top..........and cover that with plastic.............don't cut anything yet wait for spring.....then if you see shoots coming ou of the bottomt you know that it survived. Then trim it. It is going to be a sit and wait. If it survives, you might want to move it closer to the house and make a greenhouse around it. Hope you know that this is a tropical plant and will die in freezing conditions.
