How do you care for an amaryllis after blooming

Plant is 3 ft. tall and is just done blooming.  Do I fertilize?  Keep watering? Let dry out? Leave in the light?  Store in the dark?  I am a first time owner.  How many years can they live?

After it finishes blooming, I take it out of the water and let it dry out in a cool dark place.  Mine is about 8 years old, we had to use a liquid fertilizer to get it to bloom this year.  Blooms were bright red but much shorter than other years.  We then plant it in the ground in June and it blooms again.  Then take it out in Sept and let it dry out again.

We just planted our dried out one again but outside........it will bloom again and after that dies...............dry it out and put away again and bring it out again in Oct........to replant in dirt anddo it all over again fertilize it and enjoy it again during the cold winter months.  When it is done, stop watering put it in a place out of the sun and let it go dormant again.
