I live in the middle of Texas, and my Dad always planted his potatoes by the moon in February.  I used seed potatoes and planted redskin and Yukon gold.  It has been 3 months, do you think they are ready?  The green plant above the ground is about 8 in. on smoe; 12 in. on others. Thanks.

You will want to wait until the plants start to die back a bit. This is usually sometime in the fall. You can also carefully dig around the edges to get an idea of the size.  This will also give you some idea of when you should harvest.

personally where i live in oregon you have time my potato bush usually gets twice the size as what you are describing smiley.....but......when i was new to growing potatos i could not wait to eat them so i checked them when my plant was about 12in around and about the same in height...i had potatos ....YEAH...i grew my own pototos...i was so excited..and they were reds....but they were very small ...perfect for what they call a baby red to cook whole...but when i saw the size of the first one i just re-covered and allowed to grow for another month or so......so my answer would be to take your small hand held planting trowel and dig one up to see....you will not kill the plant..smiley let me know what you find ...potatos are so much fun to grow .      mb

you could check one but usually they wait until the tops fall over and start to die.
