Genbug, my Greek teacher's best friend was a professor of botony specializing in fungi -- world famous kind of specialist. He told us no one should EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, EVER harvest mushrooms without being under the direct supervision of someone as expert as he was. He informed us that there are any number of pairs of kinds of mushrooms that look remarkably alike {to "lay" people with our guidebooks and such}, but one of which is benign and edible and the other of which is DEADLY in small amounts. He told us that far too many people die of liver failure from eating mushrooms they have harvested on their own, and he had even known of people in the field of botony (not fungi specialists) who SHOULD have known better, who picked their own mushrooms and died. We're talkin' if you survive (not many do), you'll need a liver transplant. It happens so rarely that we usually don't hear about it beyond the state that the people died in, but here in California, I read or hear about a case almost every year. It is definitely NOT worth the risk. Please don't do this! You can buy mushroom growing kits on line through reputable companies that have done the homework for you so you and yours can grow your own shrooms and be safe.
