Compost is nothing more than plant matter (and any organic matter) that has deterioated. Mix your compost with soil on a ration of plus or minus 1/2 and /2, then spread the compost over the bed of your garden at least 2" thick. Let sit for 3 to 4 days, then till, make sure that the compost is mixed into the top soil. Water the area, and let sit for an hour after which, if there is sufficient water on the area the top layer of your garden will be moist to touch (when sitting for an hour without water). Wait at least 4 days before planting, this will give the now tilled compost to seep into the ground a little more, and let the magic begin. -Birdy
