why did my 4 year old dogwood tree die?

Question

Doing just fine until this spring-it bloomed-not as well as in previous years-

Last summer we were in drought conditions and this year nice amount of rain and moderate temps--Each spring fed tree acid loving plANT AND TREE FOOD.

We had a mild winter last year- nothing severe-moderate to low snow levels and very good temps for Michigan.We live in Battle Creek.

What could possibly be going on-? Seems like failure to thrive or something of the sort.

They have very soft delicate wood.  Did someone hit it with a lawnmower or it hit by something even a weedwacker can damage the bark.  They are very sensitive trees.
