have heard that the leaves are not edible, but then someone else heard about a soup that one can make using the leaves.

Extremely TOXIC..........contains very high amounts of oxalic acid called ethane diacid...........only eat the stalks not the leaves, the leaves can make you very very sick.  Don't believe the the myth.........this chemical is used in metal polishes, stain removers, bleach and anti-rust products etc..........not safe & very dangerous to eat.  Don't even mulch those leaves, please bag & trash them.
