What can be done for onion root rot?

I'm planting Dutch sets, but it doesn't seem to matter.  My onions do well to a point, then dwindle and becomine sickly.  When pulled, they have no root system.  The bulb is hard and unuseable. I have this problem in my garden as well as the neighbour behind.

sound like both of you need to amend your soil this fall......mulch, lime old horse manure, hay and or straw.....if I have some leaves, I turn that in also with the cultivator.  plant the onions in a well drained area.  good luck with next years crop.................I should mention that maybe your soil needs to be tested....that is when I found out we need much more lime than I was using.
