They grow in beds layered with sand, peat, gravel & sand.  Known as a bog left by glaciers 10,000 years ago.  Some growers add several inches of sand every year.  Some pick dry but most flood the bogs to collect the cranberries for market.  So planted in the mix above and then flooded to collect the fruit.  There is a lot more that you have to read about, they have a bug and fungus problem.
